10 Most Inaccessible But Ultimately Rewarding Albums Ever
8. Einstürzende Neubauten - Kollaps
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knUDV_ppSyE There are records that are palatable to popular consensus and then there are those that defy logic in almost every way imaginable, as this list attests to. Kollaps by German noise extremists Einstürzende Neubauten falls into the latter category by default because of the inconceivably extreme manner that it follows. A clear influence on the industrial scene, Kollaps is one of the most authentic products to emerge from that cold minimalist genre. It doesn't want to be accessible much less care about it as evidenced by the clinking disconnection on tracks like the stark, metallic opener 'Tanz Debil' or the drilling probes of the flat out maniacal 'Steh Auf Berlin'. There's a grassroots kind of movement that can be heard throughout this curious long-player that stems from the band's thin production and clipping instrumental forays that further enhances the harsh reality of their world. This uneasiness comes to fruition on highlights like the plodding thud of the epic title track 'Kollaps' or the dark isolation of the fragmented 'U-Haft-Muzak', just two cuts off of this annoyingly hypnotic creation that signify the lack of boundaries this group have with such a limited tool-set. It is their use of the drums, (if you would call them that) the intense vocals and the traces of synthesizers that don't seem to follow any predetermined path that makes the record such an unpredictable, if not always listenable, piece of outsider music. It's a violation not just of the ears but of all the senses in an almost sickening and always disturbing way. There's a certain appreciation that comes with that though as well because of the dedication these men clearly have for their art form. It's not pretty and it's not catchy but it is authentic and it is most certainly unique.
