10 Most Infamous Tracks In Rock N Roll
4. Stupid Mop - Pearl Jam
When Pearl Jam went into the sessions for their third record Vitalogy, Eddie Vedder's plan was to make the polar opposite of a typical Pearl Jam record. Instead of having the regular alt-rock ragers across the track listing, this record took a few sonic detours into ballads, punk rock, and even accordion-driven songs.
After going through the haze of disparate genres, the album closes with the track "Stupid Mop," which was startling on first listen to say the least. The entire track runs at about 8 minutes and is the sound of patients in a mental hospital that Vedder recorded when he was a kid. In an effort to change the album's tone quickly, the track comes right after the pop-rock of "Better Man" and the moody introspection of "Immortality" to give the listener a sense of unease before the record ends. Though the track has grown in stature with age, some of the band's members were extremely hesitant to include the song on the record from the get-go.
With this song closing out the album, Vedder was hoping to shake off the celebrity status of the band and step down from the mantle of alt-rock gods. "Stupid Mop" isn't perfect, but it is a great example of showing the band as a living entity.
