One of the greatest London punk bands during the '70s, was the self-described "deliberate underachievers" X-Ray Spex. They offered up an alternative to the usual thrashing guitars and male vocals, that saturated the scene.

The group was driven by two defining features: Wailing saxophone leads, and Poly Styrene's police-siren vocals. To say her voice was unique would be an understatement, she shrieked and wailed her way through lyrics, dropping in and out of tune with an incessant, dedication to non-conformity.

Styrene was an early fan of the Sex Pistols, and was part of the first wave of kids to form a group after their rapid rise to infamy. She was the perfect candidate for the lead singer of a punk band - flaunting her feminist ideals, mixed race heritage and defying every expectation of a women in music - she was everything the stuffy conservative establishment, feared and hated.
