10 Most Overrated Rock Albums Of The 2000s
2. Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - Coldplay (2008)
This album had the potential to be great. Brian Eno headed the production side of things, with legendary electronica DJ, Jon Hopkins, also lending a hand. But alas, Chris Martin relied on pretentious lyrics, posing as insight, rather than writing anything of substance.
Although critics hailed the collaboration of Chris Matin and Brian Eno, one can't escape the feeling that this was another attempt from Coldplay to mimic Radiohead. Chris Martin has always been on the heels of Thom Yorke; trying to match his creative aptitude for reinventing rock music.
After his idol Tom Yorke strayed into the realms of ambient electronic prog, Martin attempted to follow. But, he lacked the originality or brooding intensity. Coldplay instead turned into a pop-centric arena act, who relied on clever marketing. Matin and Co, cavorted about in military jackets for the following album tour - a trope which had already been used by The Beatles, Hendrix, The Libertines and My Chemical Romance.
Coldplay might have been hailed as musical revolutionaries with this album, but go delve into any Radiohead album that proceeded it. You'll soon realise Coldplay took what Radiohead left on the cutting room floor; turned the cheesy lyricism up to 11 and reduced anything that was interesting, into an offensively bland soup of sound.
