10 Most Overrated Rock Albums Of The 2000s
1. Babel - Mumford & Sons (2012)
Unless you're part of that most cynical bread of hipster, then you can't deny the appeal of Mumford's first album. It was full of banjo knee-slappers; perfect for sloshy cider to, and celebrating all things traditionally English with. But it also showcased Marcus Mumford as one of the more sensitive song writers of his generation. It's hard to no come across like a self-centred individual, when all you write about is lost love, but Mumford was self-aware enough to avoid this. At least for his first album...
Babel wasn't that bad... , but was it worthy of a Grammy? Short answer: No. No doubt Mumford devotees will be howling at this, but the truth is, Babel was merely a continuation of the same themes and techniques of their debut - only with slightly less memorable tracks. Sadly their sound was so specific that once they wrote their early hits, they had no were else to turn. Little Lion Man and The Cave, had been so over-played that by the time their second album came out, joyous folk rock was tiresome.
The band seemed to recognise this after their second album. Leaning into electronic guitars with their follow-up work, but it all felt a bit bland. Their magic was in their folky uniqueness but it wasn't something that had a long life-span.
