10 Most Overrated Rock Albums Of The '70s

1. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols

There’s absolutely no denying that the Sex Pistols are a legendary band. They helped to codify punk, inspired a generation to start a band, and shocked the establishment with their antics. More often than not, though, what they’re remembered for is their look, their knack for a soundbite, their notoriety rather than the music itself.

To that end, their sole studio album is a bit of a slog to get through. There are classics on there, particularly “Pretty Vacant” and “Holidays In The Sun” which sparkle with John Lydon’s searing wit and the quality musicianship of Glen Matlock and Steve Cook.

But a lot of the album is downright bad. There’s the startlingly regressive shock rock of “Bodies”, strange industry score settling on “E.M.I”, and if we’re being honest, the somewhat tedious un-punk slog of “Anarchy In The UK”.

The music was sort of beside the point - this was a fashion project on the part of Malcolm McLaren and a highly successful one at that. No doubt the sheer chaos of the live shows makes the record a fond memory for those who were there; for the rest of us, it doesn’t hold up.
