10 Most Popular ANTI-Rockstars
5. Kurt Cobain
Being a big, rich rock star can be a bit of a mixed bag. As opposed to having people at your beck and call every day, you also have to sacrifice a good chunk of your privacy if you want any shot at really making it in the industry. Though some people could balance it well, Kurt Cobain was the least likely person to reach the big time in the early '90s.
From the way he dressed to the off-handed comments he would make about other acts, Cobain was pretty much the antithesis of what was expected from a rockstar. Instead of strutting his stuff on MTV, most of the ethos brought across by Cobain is more of a "what you see is what you get" character, uninterested in mugging for the camera. Though he did have his respected musical heroes like John Lennon, Cobain always tried to downplay his celebrity, even when the rise of grunge made him the voice of alternative music.
Even when he was on top of the world, Cobain still acted as somewhat of a grunge authenticator, judging any other act he deemed as too mainstream. The over the top exposure did end up proving to be too much for this always introverted man, eventually culminating in his suicide in 1994. While Cobain always put the music before anything else, his legacy will always be the shy kid who cracked under the pressure.
