4. Kirk Hammett
Metal as a genre has always prided itself on some degree of showmanship. From the opening strains of Black Sabbath to the amazing party atmosphere from the hair metal scene, no metal act was really able to get a rise out of an audience without some sort of musical spectacle when you hit the stage. Though Metallica is no exception to this rule, the face-melting solos have actually come from one of the genre's resident introverts.
Whenever you go and see a Metallica show, Kirk Hammett has always looked to downplay his role in the band, despite being one of the greatest soloists of his generation. Compared to the snarling growl of James Hetfield or even the over the top energy from Lars Ulrich, Kirk has always found a way to in essence hide behind his guitar, whether it be standing fairly still onstage or only coming up to the front when the time calls for it. Hell, most of the time all it takes to win the crowd over in Kirk's case is to drown his solo in endless amounts of wah.
Even when newcomer Robert Trujillo joined the group, he still showed much more enthusiasm than Kirk has ever dared to try. In this case though, that's not a bad thing at all, allowing Kirk to be the spiritual guide and de facto mediator between James and Lars when things get ugly. For as faceless as reserved as he may come off next to his metal brethren, there's still no denying the massive amount of chops Kirk has under his belt.
