10 Most Shocking Moments In Rock Music History

7. Metallica/Guns N Roses Riot

At the start of the '90s, it felt like the time had come for the heavier side of rock to take over. Just a few years shy of Nirvana's arrival on the scene with the rest of the grunge movement, the idea of having both Guns N Roses and Metallica at the top of their game on one tour was almost too much for your average rock fan to handle. It should have been amazing...if the crowd weren't given just two halves of a show.

Pulling into Montreal on the tour, Metallica was the first on the bill, which heralded disaster about midway through the set. Unsure of where he was supposed to go, James Hetfield ended up getting severely burned during a pyrotechnic blast, which left him incapacitated. After he was rushed to the hospital, Lars Ulrich went up onstage to announce the late ending of their show, leaving Guns N Roses up to save the day.

Then again, Guns N Roses can't necessarily be called the most reliable of acts. About 4-5 songs into the set, Axl Rose ended up cutting Guns' show short too, citing voice and monitor problems being a hinderance to his performance. Despite being in Canada, no one was having it in the crowd, leading to a full-on riot in the streets and people tearing the entire venue apart. While Metallica would go on to other things and Axl would go on to start other riots, this is one blemish on their legends they wouldn't soon forget.
