10 Most Unappreciated Indie Rock Albums Of The 2000s

4. Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock & Roll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nek-YO7v3Yw They were featured on the '10 Most Underrated Bands Of The Past Decade' list and it would be a crime not to include them here too. The daft but clever musings of Eddie Argos were in full swing on Art Brut's debut record Bang Bang Rock & Roll, an album that used the indie rock label not as an all encompassing portrayal of the group but more as a vehicle for the vivid lyrical monotony to reside in. Only with Art Brut would that description be a compliment because their brand of music is as self-aware and humorous as music comes. In their world monotony is something worth savoring, public transport is a blessing and forming a band is well.....worth writing a song about. They tackle subjects that other bands simply ignore because it may seem too obtuse and this is where the brilliance of the group lies. It's a shame the record buying public weren't more aware when this faultless record was released in 2006, astonishingly only peaking at Number 116 on the Official UK Album Charts. That figure only becomes harder to swallow when listening to this quirky, unique LP. Sure it differs quite a bit lyrically compared to the genre's conventional lyricism but musically it's as hard-hitting if not more so than much of their competition like the frenzied guitar riffage of 'Formed A Band' or the screeching squeals of 'Modern Art', highlighting their love for "rocking out" as much as their love for obscure topical conversation. Despite such a lukewarm reception from the public at the time there's no doubt that from a critical eye this is an album that will go down as a genuine classic, not only because of its lyrical ingenuity but also because of the high level of songwriting quality that permeates throughout it.
