10 Most Underrated Albums In Rock Music History

6. Tim - The Replacements

For years, it seems like everyone has wiped the pre '90s alternative music out of the conversation. Along with Nirvana breaking down the boundaries at the start of the '90s, we also had everyone from The Pixies to Jane's Addiction paving the way before them. If we're looking for the real classics though, you might want to look a little bit further back.

Back in the age of MTV, the Replacements were probably the most charming bar band that the world had ever seen, fitting somewhere between hardcore punk and sappy power pop. Though the cheeky Beatles rip Let It Be set the band up for something big, Tim is where they really started to capitalize on their strengths. Alongside the punk aesthetic, Paul Westerberg's fascination with radio rock made these songs feel a lot more anthemic, like the opener Hold My Life or the boozy romp Waitress in the Sky.

The lyrics were definitely a change of pace though, bringing together down on their luck people that you'd find in Springsteen songs and finding ways to celebrate their flaws like on Bastards of Young. And if you're not careful, songs like Here Comes a Regular can tug on just the right heartstring to leave you in tears. Because these weren't some guys looking to get famous. They were just a good rock and roll band, and sometimes that's all you need.
