1. Art Brut
All things considered it is clear that this indie-rock outfit from Deptford, England are the most underrated band of the last 10 years for more than one reason. Firstly they came into the industry when their chosen genre was at its height in the mid 2000s. Secondly their debut and subsequent releases are consistently met with universal critical acclaim. Thirdly they are every bit as good as the music critics would have you believe. They manage this through an unorthodox mix of spoken word and spiky guitar stabs with lyrics ranging from the joys of transportation to their unadulterated love of Guns N Roses frontman Axl Rose. Their debut Bang Bang Rock & Roll was the sound of a band poking fun at the music industry whilst delivering some of the most delicious pieces of pop-rock being released at the time. On the bands later releases their song writing would mature with songs like "The Passenger" and "Direct Hit" showcasing their ability to create musically timeless gems and not take themselves too seriously in the process (check "Unprofessional Wrestling"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myA1pagPG58 If Arctic Monkeys are the main breakthrough artist of the scene in our time, then Art Brut are the band whose music will be revised and re-analysed to a greater extent in the decades to come. Agree or disagree with any of the artists on the list? What bands or musicians do you guys think have been underrated in the past 10 years? Jot it down in the comments section below!
