3. Baroness
This 4-piece progressive metal band from Savannah, Georgia have had their ups and downs since their debut album, 2007s The Red Album. Despite being named Album of the Year by Revolver magazine, the band didnt receive the same meteoric rise as their fellow genre competitors Mastodon. Their two releases since then have only raised the bar for what can be done within the genre despite their excellent 2009 release Blue Record now feeling like a baby step compared to their expansively epic double album from 2012, Yellow & Green. On it the bands maturation is plain to be seen in an eclectic mix of sludge, progressive, stoner and pretty much any other sub-genre in metal that you can think of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V0N1x675FQ The bands story took a turn for the worst though just months after its release when the band were involved in a bus crash while they were touring the record, luckily with everyone surviving. Despite line-up changes you can expect Baronesss next release to put most other metal bands to shame in what could very well be their best album to date.
