10 Most Underrated Bands Of The '90s
5. Stone Temple Pilots
It feels strange putting a band as huge as Stone Temple Pilots on a list of underrated bands. Given the amount of hits the band had in their prime, it's hard to think of any of their releases as being under the radar by rock standards. On the other hand, STP were underrated in a different kind of way.
Don't get me wrong, albums like Core and Purple ended up being killer hits upon release, but there was a particular venom in the air when talking about these guys. As opposed to being showered with praise, many alternative purists were giving STP a lot of hate for trying to ape the sound of Seattle. While their formation in San Diego didn't really help matters, that should not really negate the amount of kickass present on every one of their albums.
For as derivative as some of the tracks might seem, individual cuts like "Sex Type Thing" and "Interstate Love Song" still get airplay today because they are that damn good. Even apart from their grunge peers, albums like Tiny Music... marked a significant departure into glam rock, while Purple has remained a flawless slice of alt-rock from the band's grungey beginnings. STP might not be the same nowadays after the loss of Scott Weiland, but some were just too busy bashing them to take notice of the genius on display.
