10 Most Underrated Bands Of The '90s
4. The Black Crowes
It's impossible to overstate how firm a grip the alternative movement had on rock in the '90s. No matter what type of rock you played, you didn't have a fighting chance unless you were singing about disaffected youth or coating everything in distortion. There's a lot of great material in that realm, but the Black Crowes were able to offer a little bit of diversity, if only for a few minutes.
With the release of the band's album Shake Your Moneymaker, rock fans were treated with a return to the rootsier rock of the '70s. Though it wasn't necessarily Zeppelin or Aerosmith, the Crowes seemed like a direct descendent of those acts, with a bluesy foundation and mountains of attitude to go around. While the band were able to notch a few tunes on the charts like "She Talks to Angels" and "Hard to Handle," the band ended up fading fast after their initial spark.
Many would be quick to call the band a fluke, but they have remained a consistent band throughout their tenure, with albums like Amorica still holding up after 2 decades. The band even had the chance to jam with some luminaries of the rock sphere, with Jimmy Page himself appearing at some of their shows. Yeah, grunge may have had the rock throne, but when you have the blessing of Led Zeppelin, you have to be doing something right.
