10 Most Underrated Beatles Songs
2. Yes It Is - Past Masters
This may sound apocryphal, but the majority of the Beatles' output in the early years was meant to be disposable. Don't blame your humble author for that statement though...John Lennon himself had talked about having written songs for the 'meat market' in the early days before deciding to write about himself around 1965. Then again, you can feel some of that darkness creeping in if you just flipped over the vinyl.
Being one of the deep cuts from the Help! era of the band, Yes It Is is one of the more disheartening songs in the Beatles' catalog. The character in this song does still have hold of a lady friend, but his feelings are more tangled up with the love he knew before. It gets to the point where he wants her to stop wearing red because it reminds him too much of the love he left behind.
Combined with the pedal steel guitar and the aching harmonies, you can practically feel the sorrow in your headphones, with this guy not being able to put his pride away and choosing to wallow in his sadness about the one that got away. This may have been a bit of an oddball back in the day, but if it were released a few years down the line, this would have been a great addition to the goth pop set.
