10 Most Underrated Beatles Songs
3. Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine
By the time they reached the mid '60s, the Beatles were never going to go into the studio and create a song for the hell of it. These were some seasoned musicians who were going to push the boundaries of what they could do to create the best songs they knew how. When they did resort to some good natured fun though, they still made it sound amazing on Hey Bulldog.
The most surprising thing about this song is that it's not technically supposed to exist. When the Fabs went into the studio that day, they were originally supposed to mime along to their new single Lady Madonna, only to work on their new song instead. Needing some more material for the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, there's a lot more bite to this song that most of the other Fab tracks, with George wailing with a new distortion box and one of the most badass piano licks in the Beatles canon.
Granted, it's not like the words necessarily mean anything. As John Lennon would tell you, the record was not meant to be taken seriously, with most of the lyrics being either incoherent from one line to the next or just filler words in between barking sounds. Of all the Beatles deep cuts though, there's no other that really captures a hard rock vibe quite like this one.
