10 Most Underrated Britpop Albums

7. Kula Shaker – Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts

First album K, by psychedelic mystics Kula Shaker, won the hearts and minds of the British public with its radical experimentation and ingenious style merging – topping the UK Album Charts in 1996. However, the follow-up LP entitled Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts was much less favorably received.

Released in 1999, the record hit No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart, but was shredded by some critics – even leading Q Magazine to rank it as one of the worst albums ever in a 2006 list. However, one spin of this eclectic shard of peculiar pop and you’ll soon find yourself thinking: “Why all the hate?” Songs like “Sound of Drums” and “Mystical Machine Gun” drip with old-school British rock infused with exotic Middle Eastern flourishes, creating an intoxicating mix of two continents clashing against each other in a glorious celebration of all things music.

Sure, it’s way too grandiose at times, but it’s far from the turgid mess that some publications would have you believe.
