10 Most Underrated Drummers Of All Time
5. Roger Taylor - Queen
It's no real secret that people tend to think about Freddie Mercury whenever they bring up Queen. I mean, when you have one of the greatest frontmen in the history of music, it's easy for even guitar wizards like Brian May to get overshadowed from time to time. Despite the massive amount of musical eclecticism from both Mercury and May, the real rock and roll soul of the group was always in Roger Taylor.
Being in the background for most of Queen's material, Taylor's amazing way of making the audience react whenever he played was virtually unrivaled. Even though May may have written the foundation for something like We Will Rock You, Taylor is the one responsible for making it into the massive chant that we know and love today. Hell, Taylor even managed to break the curse of drummers not being able to write songs.
Across Queen's records, Taylor would step up to the front with the more straight ahead rock tunes, with his husky voice taking lead instead of Freddie's more high end wail. While this wasn't something you saw a lot in Queen's music, Taylor also deserves credit for his amazing adaptability, making his drumming fit into opera on Bohemian Rhapsody and funk on Another One Bites the Dust. Queen may very well have fallen without Freddie Mercury, but don't let that trick you into thinking that the other guys are any less important.
