10 Most Underrated Hard Rock Frontmen

2. Mike Patton - Faith No More

Faith No More were a musical freak of nature when they started getting the ball rolling. With their deep infusion of funk, classic rock, and metal, these guys were pioneering the nu metal movement long before it had become a thought in people’s minds. Though most of the band’s albums have been up to a certain standard, things started to become amazing once the band got Mike Patton in their ranks.

Instead of just bringing a typical rock vocal delivery, Patton’s vocal chops owed a lot more to the percussive sounds of hip hop than to the standard belting of the day. Throughout every song, you had no idea whether his voice was going to go into a deep-register growl or a smooth singing breakdown, which made every Faith No More song an event in and of itself.

At a time when metal acts could be labelled as glam or thrash, Faith No More were in a class all their own, with a sound that could please fans of Metallica while also having the off-color weirdness of something like Jane’s Addiction or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With numerous other projects with Mr. Bungle and Fantomas, Mike Patton is one of the few frontmen in hard rock who has continued to do whatever the hell he wants to do.
