10 Most Underrated Heavy Metal Guitarists

7. Jade Puget - AFI

For their first three albums, the band AFI were a straightforward punk act.

They were a good punk act, no doubt about that, but there wasn't much that set them apart from the rest of the pack.

That was, until Jade Puget came along.

Puget had played in various other bands with AFI members and ended up joining the group full time ahead of their fourth album Black Sails in the Sunset.

This record marked a definitive shift in their sound, as they moved away from traditional punk and inhabited a much darker place. Puget's atmospheric guitar work was a massive factor in that move.

Since then, the group have gone from strength to strength, even scoring a number one album in 2006. Puget has also continued to grow as an artist, incorporating elements of electronica and horror punk into his game.

If Puget hadn't have come along, then AFI might not have gone on to become the stars they are today. His mastery of melody helped make the group way more accessible, allowing them to share their music with a wider audience.

And also, you know, sell more records.
