10 Most Underrated Heavy Metal Guitarists
8. Nuno Bettencourt - Extreme
Similarly to Poison, the band Extreme are most famous for one very cheesy song.
More Than Words came out in 1991, landed the group their first and only US number one single, and convinced people around the world that this funk metal band were actually acoustic guitar-wielding minstrels.
This might be why Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
On More Than Words, his role is to knock out a few basic chords and harmonise with singer Gary Cherone. He does this very well, but it's not exactly what people want from a metal player.
Across Extreme's other work however, Bettencourt is an entirely different animal.
Embracing the genre's groovier side, the axeman can bust out some very catchy and impressive hooks that are guaranteed to make you move your feet.
You only have to watch one other Extreme music video to see that he is also brimming with confidence and would have made a great icon if he weren't pigeonholed into the acoustic box.
Alas, Bettencourt remains undervalued, with only his millions of dollars to fall back on.
Actually, that doesn't sound so bad.
