10 Most Underrated Indie Rock Albums Of All Time

2. Happyness - Weird Little Birthday

The London band has released two further albums of more melodically honed music which settles somewhere into a srtipped back psych-rock sound, but their particularly diverse debut remains their most fascinating release to date.

A quick scan of the track titles reveals you’re in for a bizarre ride, with opener “Baby, Jesus (Jelly Boy)” a mournful but appealing alternative birthday song complete with profanity and blasphemy. The semi-title track “Weird Little Birthday Girl” twists more bizarre lyrics (including a Prefab Sprout nod) over a catchy bass riff.

“Pumpkin Noir” continues the experimental phase with creepy voice alteration techniques that match the somewhat distressing album cover, while the finale, “Monkey In The City”, caps the record off with an aurally straightforward but no less bizarre rocker.

This is a band brimming with confidence from the off, with a sound and style that can baffle and disorient while tending towards the musically gentle. They warn you it’ll be weird going in, and it’s all the better for it.
