10 Most Underrated Kanye West Songs
7. Roses - Late Registration
There comes a point in every artist's life when they have to deal with the press, and Kanye is absolutely no stranger to this. From the first time he got a whiff of success with the College Dropout, Ye chased after his newfound fame as if he were some sort of Olympic sprinter. Once you get on top of that pedestal though, you do tend to get some shady characters coming around.
In one of the most sobering moments on Late Registration, Roses plays out almost like a soap opera, with West at the center of the tabloid circus. While still trying to find ways to support his family and friends, every verse sees Kanye getting a little bit further detached from his loved ones, as the jazzy string accompaniment underscores his sadness. The whole track ends up coming to a head towards the end, when he's visiting his family in the hospital and people are asking him to sign autographs in the hallway.
Much like his contemporaries like Kendrick Lamar and even Kurt Cobain before him, Roses amounts to a cautionary tale about how fame is not necessarily all that it's cracked up to be. Even though the idea of the media may be enticing at first, it's songs like these that show that those tabloids take a piece of you with them.
