10 Most Underrated Kanye West Songs
8. Coldest Winter - 808s & Heartbreak
In the grand scheme of hip hop, 808s and Heartbreak may be one of the most misunderstood albums of Kanye's career. Even though many people were getting ready to swear off Ye for going electronic on this project, the massive impact it's had on everyone from Drake to Future to the Weeknd in the past decade showed that he was onto something entirely new. However, you don't get that far unless you've gone through some pain beforehand.
As much as Heartbreak is centered around West's crumbling marriage, Coldest Winter was his dedication to his mother, who passed away after complications during surgery midway through the Graduation tour. Instead of the usual glitchy pop beats we have heard on songs like Heartless, this track really lives up to its title, with some of the most chilling beats on the entire record. For the duration of the track, we hear Kanye slowly grieving, as he says his final goodbye to the biggest supporter of his entire career.
The actual song proved to be so therapeutic for West that he even went so far as to simulate his mother during the live shows on tour, almost trying to make peace with her from beyond the grave. Wherever Mrs. Donda West is now, there's no doubt that she would be proud to have been immortalized like this.
