10 Most Underrated Megadeth Songs
6. Poison Was The Cure
The agony of overcoming heroin addiction is on full display in this stark and somber track from 1990's 'Rust In Peace'.
The title references methadone, a drug often used for recovering heroin addicts to help wean them off the class A menace. For Mustaine, however, it also functions as a troubling summary of his prior relationship with chemical substances.
A dark and brooding intro grows into a lightning quick barrage of thrashing mayhem. In amongst the utter chaos of Nick Menza's breakneck drums and the band's predictably electrifying riffs is Mustaine at his most brutally honest. It all compounds into a suspenseful, unnerving track about the road to self-destruction.
'Rust In Peace' is widely regarded as one of the finest LPs in thrash metal history. While it's better known for its focus on topics like war and politics, it also showcases Megadeth in a more personal, thoughtful light. 'Poison Was the Cure' remains one of the group's most emotional tracks. Bucking the typically slower-paced trend of more introspective tracks, it really beats you over the head with its unflinching portrayal of personal struggle. Just one of many highlights from this landmark member of their discography.
