10 Most Underrated Metal Albums Of The 2000s

8. Grand Magus - Iron Will (2008)

Titans of the trad metal movement that began taking shape in the late 2000s, Sweden's Grand Magus accrued something of a cult following amongst the doom metal community, emanating from their debut self-titled album in 2001. Progressively leaning into what would become their trademark Sabbath-inspired heavy metal sound, Grand Magus began the journey of their fourth studio album alongside incoming new drummer, Seb Sippola.

The resultant 'Iron Will' would act as a mini-launch pad for the trio, kickstarting the aforementioned trad metal revival scene (alongside the likes of Wolf, Blood Ceremony, and White Wizzard), and would eventually lead to them signing to Roadrunner Records, where would achieve their more recognised "big break" in 2010's 'Hammer of the North'.

Inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, and Candlemass, the modernisation of '80s/'90s doom metal, combined with the sky-punching energy of NWOBHM was done almost to a fine art on 'Iron Will'. Stomping riffs being the backbone JB's now iconically powerful voice, with songwriting and production work mighty enough to give the Gods goosebumps, this is an album for the hairy-chested, battle jacket-clad pit dwellers the world over.
