10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
7. The House Jack Built
Load was the make or break moment for a lot of Metallica fans. While fans of the Black Album found it easier to transition into the band's new style, hardcore thrash fans felt like their favorite metal band had suddenly started to cater to trendy production. Regardless of the change in sound, there was a lot more personal stuff to unpack on "The House Jack Built."
The song is much more downtempo than a lot of the band's material, with long drawn-out chords setting the scene in the intro. The entire song plods along like a dirge, almost like the singer is lamenting the loss of a friend. However, the inner workings of this tune are a lot more upsetting than you would expect.
At the time of recording, James was dealing with his alcoholism issues for the first time and using his lyrics as a means to work through his temptation. As opposed to veiling it in a character, this song is James laying everything out on the table about how much he depends on his drinking to get him through the more stressful parts of his touring life. This might not be the most pleasant thing to hear from the Metal God, but the details are too captivating to resist.
