10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
6. Motorbreath
Metallica's trademark has always been the result of four minds working together to create musical skyscrapers. Regardless of whose names are in the credits, each track would not sound the way it does without each member leaving their mark on it. On the other hand, even when James Hetfield was left to his own devices, the results were still pretty damn good.
In the early days of the band, much of what ended up on Kill Em All came as a result of James, Lars, and ex-guitarist Dave Mustaine jamming in their practice space. While the band would string all these ideas together, "Motorbreath" was the one song that James presented to the band which was completely finished. Sure, the song may only revolve around a single riff, but the youthful energy shown on this track is exhilarating.
In an interesting turn, the percussive attack of Hetfield's vocal gives the track yet another hook, which feels like a demonic nursery rhyme. Kill Em All might be a bit spotty for a debut, but the ramshackle approach works wonders for this track about living life on 10. This might pale in comparison to the band's later epics, but the tune is still a jam that you won't be able to get out of your head once you hear it.
