10 Most Underrated Nu Metal Songs
1. Easier to Run - Linkin Park
As nu metal worked its way into the next decade, the idea of Linkin Park becoming one of the biggest bands in the world didn’t even seem to make that much sense. While the pairing of rap and rock may have been groundbreaking a few years before, these new kids on the scene felt like they were just another version of what we had already heard out of bands like Korn and Staind. Linkin Park always had some real pain behind their lyrics though, and that’s something that you can never fake in this industry.
Although Hybrid Theory may have set them up to become superstars, Meteora is where they really capitalized on their success, riding the wave of nu metal and getting a lot more introspective. For as much as Breaking the Habit may get celebrated for its raw sadness, Easier to Run manages to go even further with what it’s trying to convey, as Chester opens up about the emptiness that he feels moving through his life, trying to do anything he can to take back all of the hard choices he made to pave the way for something new.
This might be the first step to getting better, but the real gut punch is the fact that there’s no resolution to what Chester went through, as he chooses to run away from his problems and replace the pain that he had bottled up with self hatred for himself. While concerned parents may have been quick to call this song terrible for encouraging feelings of depression, it goes much further than that. This song is a sign for every kid who has ever felt left out and different from the rest of the people in your life. It might not be fun being an outsider, but this song gives some comfort knowing that you’re not alone.
