10 Most Underrated Paul McCartney Songs
5. Waterfalls - McCartney II
There was some question as to where Paul was going to go next after disassembling Wings. For most of the '70s, this new band had been his main vehicle away from the Beatles, even giving him some of his biggest hits like Live and Let Die and Jet. Those days were gone now...it was time to strip everything back to canvas.
Going back to the model of his first solo album, McCartney II shows Paul embracing the electronic sounds coming from the new wave sphere, which made for some of the more eccentric (and annoying) songs of his career. Though there are some people who can't get behind something like Temporary Secretary, Waterfalls is where we see Paul's genius shining through all the synthesizers. With only a subtle synth line to anchor everything, the song is carried by Paul's vocal, as he talks about being heartbroken and in need of repair.
While most of the song stays in line with what you'd expect from Paul, the production on this song is right where it needs to be. Being somewhat of a DIY construct, there are even some spots on here that sound like what Damon Albarn would be doing decades down the road with Gorillaz's debut record. It may be a little frayed around the ends, but you'd be hardpressed to find anything else on the radio this gorgeous.
