10 Most Underrated Red Hot Chili Peppers Songs
4. Cabron - By The Way
Once John Frusciante reentered the fold in the late '90s, the Peppers were about to go on a run of albums for the ages. Although Californication marked the official return of the glory years and Stadium Arcadium was the most ambitious thing they had ever done, By the Way tends to get a bit lost in the shuffle. Outside of the singles like Can't Stop though, this is probably the most California sounding record they could have ever made.
While Californication was a bit of a reintroduction to the band after a while, Cabron is another instance where the band decides to take a few more risks from an instrumental standpoint, bringing in different sonic textures that feel like they're creating the image of the California skyline in your mind. Also, it's kind of endearing and hilarious every time Anthony rolls his tongue when saying the song title.
Granted, this is also a bit of a contentious album on the whole for the band, with Flea complaining that he didn't have nearly as much to do with the arrangements as he wanted to. Then again, if you leave John to his own devices like this, it's more than just a couple of good tunes. Here is a man reaching a level of Cali sunshine that would make someone like Brian Wilson jealous.
