10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of All Time
8. Red Rose Speedway - Paul McCartney
It's no easy task trying to replace the biggest band in the world. After the uncomfortable demise of the Beatles, Paul McCartney struggled to find a footing as a solo artist, with only a handful of songs like "Maybe I'm Amazed" cracking the charts. He tried to recover from it by debuting Wings, but it wasn't until the group's second album that things really started to look up.
Across Red Rose Speedway, McCartney sounds like he's trying to rebuild the Beatles grandeur from the ground up, with songs like "My Love" capturing the more dramatic love ballads he would have written with his old mates. Even with the nostalgia factor, McCartney incorporates new ideas he had been working on on his solo albums, with songs like "Big Barn Bed" and "Get on The Right Thing" sounding like they could have come off of Ram.
The album also shows McCartney taking more chances with his new group, with the final track being a multiple song medley in the vein of the final minutes of Abbey Road. This try certainly doesn't match McCartney's previous collaboration, but it still stands as a coherent piece of brilliance on its own.
There was no way Paul could have ever topped anything he made with the Beatles, but this album's eclectic mix of different styles were a sign of better things on the horizon.
