10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The '90s

8. Fantastic Planet - Failure

For as amazing as the decade started off for rock, fans were pretty burnt out around '98. Since everything got all dark and serious and nu metal was becoming the order of the day, there was nothing all that engaging for your average rock fan to take in anymore. Although Radiohead may have pointed the way forward in England, we were getting something a lot more futuristic stateside.

Or at least...that's what should have happened but didn't. Despite notching one hit on the charts with Stuck on You, Failure never really reached the heights they should have gotten with Fantastic Planet, which sent you on a trip through the stars the minute you listened to it. While you can hear different echoes of acts like Nirvana in their delivery, there's an oddly digital sound across this record that makes it feel like it's being beamed in from some satellite millions of miles outside the galaxy.

Hell, it wouldn't be surprising if acts like 30 Seconds to Mars or Angels and Airwaves took a lot of their cues from this exact album, with most of the space rock fundamentals turning up right here. There's a lot more to hear than just post grunge in this thing...you just might need that little bit of rocket fuel to get you there.
