10 Most Underrated Rock Songs Of The 90s

6. Waiting For Somebody - Paul Westerberg

Most '90s aficionados seem to look to the soundtrack of the film Singles as the holy grail of the alternative movement. Running almost like an alternative mixtape, this is all that you could have wanted from an album in the '90s, encapsulating bits and pieces of classic rock with titans of the new wave like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. While the likes of Pearl Jam may have been the big ticket items, it wouldn't be complete without the one who started it all.

Long before the alternative scene really started to gain legs, Paul Westerberg was already a musical titan of sorts, having put in time as the manic songwriter who led the Replacements. With his former band in the rearview, Waiting for Somebody was the first real taste of his solo career, which fit in perfectly among the rest of the songs on this album.

Sure, most of the song isn't nearly as inventive as something you would have been hearing off of Badmotorfinger from around the same time, but you can still hear the genesis of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam sprinkled in between every single note he hits. This is the kind of music that the '90s were made for...a little rough around the edges, yet still having its heart on its sleeve through it all.
