10 Most Underrated Rock Songs Of The 90s
4. I'm Afraid of Americans - David Bowie
The idea that David Bowie was even slightly adventurous up until the '90s is at least commendable on its own merits. I mean, the man gave us bits and pieces of everything from glam rock to kraut rock to even post rock...isn't that enough for the masses to take in? It would be in theory....but I'm Afraid of Americans showed us that Bowie was as willing to play with his sound as we were listening to it.
Having a bit of a popularity boost from the inclusion of Trent Reznor, this little sampling from the album Earthling shows Bowie delving into the industrial pool in full capacity. Though Bowie had hinted at this kind of work on albums like Outside, this was the real deep dive that most fans were waiting for, which managed to slip slightly under the radar in its time.
Compared to the rest of the industrial revolution going on at the time, most rock fans were just as likely to pick up the new Nine Inch Nails or Ministry album before even entertaining the idea of listening to this. On its own merits though, Bowie still had a knack for songwriting and managed to cram every bit of his eccentric personality through this digitized filter. This is the same guy who did Let's Dance...just with a little more dirt under his boots.
