10 Most Underrated Songs (On Classic Albums)
3. Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac
Rumours has been known by many as the best breakup album of all time. With multiple members going through breakups with other members, the band channeled all their pent-up energy into moody songs such as "Dreams" and "Don't Stop," both of which became landmark tracks of 70's rock radio.
Given all the sunshine present on this record, "Never Going Back Again" may be the happiest sounding breakup song on them all. The track is dominated by Lindsey Buckingham, whose frank lyrics about being left out to dry one too many times has caused him to leave for good. It's pretty depressing stuff, but the instrumentation is anything but off-putting, with the cheery acoustic guitar melody and vocals bouncing along like a breezy singalong.
In addition to sounding absolutely gorgeous, this song is also known in guitar circles as being one of the more difficult patterns that Buckingham laid down on a Fleetwod Mac record. This is probably the most painful track Buckingham had ever written, but sometimes that makes for the greatest artistic moments. Stevie Nicks may have been an excellent songwriter in her own right, but using her as inspiration made for a song that could compete with any of her hits.
