In the post-indie-revival of the 2010s, Kevin Parker's Tame Impala brought psychedelic rock back into the mainstream. With the project's first release, Innerspeaker (2010), parker delivered heavily fuzzed out guitar riffs, with wobbling melodies and dreamscape atmospheres.
Since then, Tame Impala have slowly infiltrated the mainstream, with the psychedelia laced electro-pop of Currents (2015) and The Slow Rush (2020). Like Mac DeMarco, Parker writes and records the majority of Tame Impala's music himself, and it's his guitar playing (particularly on his earlier records) that caught attention of rock fans, eager for a new sound to latch onto.
His spiralling late '60s/ early '70s riffs on Innerspeaker (2010) and Lonerism (2012), were enough of a callback to classic rock to entice the old guard. But coupled with a forward thinking approach to music, and Parker's love of pop, he's been able to capture the minds of a younger generation.
Last year, Parker and his troop of session musicians recorded a live performance of Innerspeaker, in its entirety, to mark its 10th Anniversary. If you need more convincing of this guy's guitar chops, go check it out.
