10 Most Unique Guitarist In Alternative Rock Music

5. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana

Kurt Cobain was the whole package. His lyrics were poetic and scathing; his public persona reinvented the notion of a rock star and his aptitude for writing instantly recognisable guitar tracks was unparalleled.

Cobian's approach to guitar was less about a refined technique and more about channeling as much uncontrollable energy into his instrument as possible - only fitting for a guy in a grunge band. Whereas someone like Tom Morrello would play with an energy that seemed channeled into precise riffs and skilfully practiced solos, Cobain's playing was like an explosion of untamed emotion.

Listen to him play live and it never sounds the same. Sometimes he's out of tune, often he hits the wrong notes, but non of the makes one bit of difference to the impact of his performance. He pushed his emotion through his instrument with the same erratic and unbridled manor with which he screamed his lyrics.

Cobain could certainly play the guitar, but it wasn't with any preconceived notion of what note should go where. It was purely an expression of whatever he felt in the moment.
