10 Music Artists Who Hated Their Own Success

9. Tom Araya

As frontman of metal luminaries Slayer, Tom Araya has chalked up numerous gold records and two Grammy Awards alongside performing thousands of gigs to fans so adoring they border on a cult, yet despite the band still going strong in 2015, the 54 year old has voiced his displeasure with the touring lifestyle. Lavish it may be, the band enjoying cosy, air conditioned buses and VIP treatment wherever they go, yet Araya admitted that being away from the Texan ranch he shares with wife Sandra and children Ariel (19) and Tomas (16) takes the shine away from being a celebrity. He even confessed that, while travelling from continent to continent playing shows and being worshipped by fans, he counts down the days until he can return home. While the obvious suggestion is to quit touring and stay home, it€™s difficult for a musician who is still so inspired to create music to simply drop it all, walk away and take up cattle farming. This presents the interesting catch 22 situation in which many artists find themselves: wanting to produce art and present it to the world but trying to avoid the trappings of fame that are an inevitable consequence of success.
