10 Music Bands Who Had An Extra Member You Never Knew About
5. The Prodigy – Leeroy Thornhill (Dancer, 1990–00)
Most people only know The Prodigy as the unstoppable electronic Essex three-piece made up of Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality that dominated festivals for nearly 20 years.
But for 10 years there were four of them. Leeroy Thornhill didn’t sing or play but danced with the group. He left whilst the band were recording their fourth album ‘Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned’ and would later record under the moniker Flightcrank.
Howlett would go on to say: “Leeroy‘s departure from the band is obviously not going to affect the music. We are both into different things and moving in different directions but I respect him and wish him good luck with what he does.”
Leeroy gave some clues why he split from the band in later interviews:
“We got to the point where we weren’t 100 per cent satisfied on stage any more because we’d toured that album such a long time… We were on the road for eight years and, you know, Maxim‘s going to have a baby, I’m getting married. So, you know, we’ve been taking some time out. We’re not kids any more. I’m so proud of everything we did. That was the time of my life and they’re the best band in the world. Top boys who are still my mates.”
Recently Leeroy’s given some insight into how The Prodigy are doing now there’s only two of them after the tragic passing of Keith Flint in March 2019, saying: “We got together on the anniversary of Keith's death and went out to celebrate his life. It was all good. I know Liam wants to finish The Prodigy album he was doing, I don't know how far along he is."
