10 Music Genre Switchups That Made Absolutely No Sense

5. Use Your Illusion - Guns N Roses

Part of the appeal behind Guns N Roses in the early days was just how much more authentic they felt against their hair metal contemporaries. At the same time that bands like Warrant and Ratt were playing the Sunset Strip, Appetite for Destruction felt like it was much more at street level, taking the attitude of punk and making one of the best rock records of the '80s. So naturally when you've made something that feels that dirty at grimy, the next step is to obviously go as over the top as you possibly can for the follow up.

When you look at the kind of sonic jump that Guns made during the Use Your Illusion sessions, it's hard to even make sense of what you're hearing. While you still have Slash's guitar prominent on almost every track, this is almost an opportunity for Axl Rose to make every single style of song that he wanted, whether that's the piano ballads or just going back to the traditional rock and roll that they rode in on.

Though both of these projects are far from bad, it's always a bit of a shock going from one song to the next. Just when you try to settle into a groove with something like Right Next Door To Hell, you get the acoustic stylings of You Ain't the First, then followed quickly by the colossal epic November Rain. The logical followup to Appetite is in here somewhere, but Axl may have tried to make the band grow up a little too quickly.
