10 Music Genre Switchups That Made Absolutely No Sense
2. Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino - Arctic Monkeys
Even though the Arctic Monkeys have been around since 2006, their discography makes it feel like the band has been around for 30 years. In the years since Whatever People Say I Am, the band had shaken off their garage rock persona and dipped their toes into the world of stoner rock before finally finding pure rock and roll on tracks like R U Mine? and Do I Wanna Know?. And for those of us that thought the stoner rock sessions were weird...honey, we had not begun to understand what weird looked like.
Almost taking a quantum leap from where they were before, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is Alex Turner trying his hand at making something in the world of lounge music, hoping to evoke the kind of extraterrestrial hotel that's mentioned in the lyrics. And while this album does exactly what it says on the tin, it's definitely a change of pace with what we were expecting, taking the rock and roll they had built up for a decade and replacing it with hazy songs like She Looks Like Fun.
Is this a bad album, though? No, not really. For people who were into the more downtempo sounds of the Monkeys, this is still in that mold, just with a much more laid back groove to it. You have to give Turner credit for following his muse on this album, but you might want to be careful not to get audio whiplash going from this to I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor.
