10 Music Side Projects Better Than The Main Band
4. Temple of the Dog
Not many of these side projects come together out of necessity. As opposed to the more manufactured side of the music industry, you just need to let these groups evolve naturally before they actually have the chance to create something great. While death might not have been the best catalyst for that, it did lead to one of the greatest supergroups of all time in Temple of the Dog.
Shortly before Mother Love Bone's first album was released, lead singer Andy Wood died of a heroin overdose, leaving the rest of the band with no singer and friend Chris Cornell absolutely dejected. During some downtime in between touring with Soundgarden, Cornell decided to write songs in tribute to his fallen friend and asking a few members of Mother Love Bone to play on the recordings.
Along with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament coming into the fold, they also gave a vocal showing for new kid Eddie Vedder, who they were hoping to join their new outfit Pearl Jam. Although this is the product of both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog still feels like a unique entity all its own, as if they are using this music as therapy to get over the loss of their friend.
While we may never know what Andy Wood would go on to do past this point, there's no doubt that he would be proud that his friends could pick up the pieces like this.
