10 Music Side Projects Better Than The Main Band

3. A Perfect Circle

Some of the best bands in the world usually start out with a couple of guys in a garage. Though you do have acts like Deep Purple who already come together as seasoned musicians, the best musical chemistry comes when you have players that have grown up working off each other. While most bands get their start on the road or in the bars, A Perfect Circle got started in the mind of Billy Howerdel.

Having an idea for a new project while working as the guitar tech for Tool, Howerdel began writing songs with a female voice in mind before eventually persuading Maynard James Keenan to be the frontman.

This is a far cry from what Tool is used to though, with most of Billy's riffs feeling heavier and slightly gothic in their presentation like Judith or the Outsider.

Outside of both Maynard and Billy, the rest of the band is a virtual who's who of talent, featuring members of Queens of the Stone Age and 30 Seconds to Mars entering the fold on and off through the years.

If there's anyone who lands the killing blow though, it has to be James Iha, who works his technical prowess across these tracks that make them seep into your brain. Compared to the other acts on this list, A Perfect Circle feels like something that shouldn't be possible, and yet somehow found its way into existence.
