10 Music Videos Banned By MTV

1. Tool - Prison Sex (1993)

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has never been one to steer away from controversial or difficult subject matters. In fact that's sort of his calling card. Although Keenan has never been open about whether or not he was abused as a child, he's been vocal about his distain for his stepfather. His lyrics have often made references to child abuse, rape and emotional manipulation.

Whether this track is a fictitious account or based in fact, it's a stark examination of how abuse manifests and is able to continue unchecked. The accompanying video symbolically represents the cycle of abuse. Shot entirely in stop motion, a puppet doll is shown trapped in a room. Throughout the video, it is subjected to manipulation by a strange humanoid creature. At one point the doll is left paralysed while the humanoid uses a paintbrush to probe its body. As the video continues the symbolism only becomes more troubling.

Unsurprisingly, the subject matter was deemed unsuitable for a wider audience and after MTV received a number of complaints they pulled it indefinitely.
