10 Music Videos Banned By MTV

7. Thirty Seconds To Mars - Hurricane (2009)

By now it's fairly well established that Jared Leto has something of an ego. For the first half of the pandemic he was sequestered at a private resort in Croatia - dressed as white Jesus, with a devoted following of fans (disciples). And, if his music videos are anything to go by, he certainly considers himself as some kind of saviour figure.

Whether he's doing battle in an imperial Chinese palace, or fighting in the Middle East, Leto's always positioned as a character whose moral compass is one we should follow - even if its not clear why. No one can ever accuse Thirty Seconds To Mars for being unambitious in their vision, but often their visions are wildly ambiguous.

Hurricane was the epitome of their pretentious endeavours into the realm of film. The 13-minute video shows the guys running around the city at night, chased by killer cyberpunks. Leto wastes no time showing off his chiseled abs, remaining shirtless for the entire video. We also get to see Leto take part in some kinky S&M scenes. The video is little more than an exercise in artsy cinematography, depicting violence and sex for the sake of it. There's a plethora of shots featuring Leto staring into the distance, as if he's figured out the answer to some unknown conundrum, the rest of us could never hope to.

Needless to say, all the ball-gags, spittle and depictions of murder were enough to get the extended version banned.

Before engrossing myself in the written word, I spent several years in the TV and film industry. During this time I became proficient at picking things up, moving things and putting things down again.
