6. Queen - I Want To Break Free (1984)

Although the '80s saw hair metal musicians play around with gender-bending - to wild success on the glam metal scene - the idea of men actually dressed as women still felt uncomfortable to an American audience. Queen's arguably most famous video was too much for the fragile minds of the US population.

The group had only intended to parody British soap operas, but the connotations behind the lyrics - alluding to a man wanting to come out - coupled with Freddie Mercury in a tiny little mini skirt, just seemed like too much of an endorsement of homosexuality.

A guy with a moustache and a pair of fake breasts was enough to scare conservative parents into thinking the end times had come. It seems absurd now, but this sentiment was the reason I Want To Break Free originally performed fairly badly in the US charts. If only we could go back and show MTV's execs a few episodes of Drag Race...
