10 Music Videos That Changed Music Forever
6. Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar
Pat Benatar was already a prominent voice in the rock community before the music video era. With songs like "Heartbreaker" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," her songs had just the right amount of hooks while also showcasing her hard rock pipes. Once MTV came calling though, Benatar decided to go more ambitious than just mock-performing.
The entire video for "Love is a Battlefield" begins with a falling out that Benatar has while at home before striking out on her own. From there, she becomes a dancer in a bar, where she is harassed by pimps. After multiple instances of being put down by these seedy characters, Benatar rallies up her fellow dancers to rebel against these scumbags and proceed to walk into the sunrise, free from all their inhibitions.
Not once in those last few paragraphs was lip-syncing a prominent part of the video. This was one of the first times where a video was made with the music seeming like nothing more than score to underpin the wordless storytelling going on onscreen. This opened the door for so many artists to showcase themselves in a way that wasn't necessarily just setting up your stage gear and letting it rip. Where most female pop stars were known for their innocent video style, Benatar proved herself as a badass rocker who could even put her male counterparts to shame.
