10 Music Videos That Could Be Horror Movies
5. Fever Ray - If I Had A Heart
If I Had A Heart has featured prominently on shows such as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Vikings, and the video which accompanies the track is as cinematic as both.
It draws upon a primal, native horror with mixes of American Gothic locations, immediately dark and chilling as a young brother and sister are ferried across a river. Watching them are distressing figures hidden behind sinister masks with mouths like cartoon piranhas.
The blurry aesthetic of the video causes viewers to second guess the horrors on screen, such as the cast of dead bodies outside of the grand white house. The Southern Gothic interior, lit by candlelight, has limbs splayed from behind furniture hinting at more corpses. More of the masked tribal figures are indoors. Their lack of motion is sinister in the mass murder scene.
However, it is Karin Dreijer who cuts the most traditional horror figure, as they're shown with their face painted in a bold black and white skull design with gnarly oversized teeth taking up the lower half of their face.
The video is beautifully shot but subdued and slow in action. The menacing tribal figures and the glorious locations are a solid starting point for a cinematic clash between modernity far away from home and the supernatural and mythical elements of a tribal culture.
